Breeding Coloured Egg Laying Hens

Ever wanted to collect a basket of eggs in beautiful natural shades of blue, green, chocolate brown, pink, plum or even lavender? In the lead-up to Easter, Bowral Co-op is inviting the community to discover the secrets of coloured egg laying—and learn how to create a vibrant, naturally colourful egg basket of your own.

Join us for a special Q&A session with expert guest speaker Libby from Libby’s Heritage Chickens.

With more than 20 years of breeding experience, Libby will share her insights into the science behind coloured eggs and how to select and breed chickens to achieve your desired results. Whether you’re starting your first flock or looking to add a splash of colour to your egg basket, this session will cover questions like:

  • How to choose chickens based on the egg colour you want
  • What breeds produce unique colours like plum, green, blue, and dark chocolate
  • The best layers for backyard setups
  • Practical tips for building and maintaining a colourful flock

Libby will also have young sexed chicks available for sale on the day.
